Cynthia Howard

– Exhibitions

In 2007 Cynthia completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at QUT. Thus far her creative pursuits have resulted in exhibiting locally and internationally and visual merchandising for Space Furniture.

She is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary creative interested in escapism. Attracted to creative stimulus that operates to seduce and envelope the audience into a proposed fiction or idea. Much of Cynthia’s works are allusions to fictions, are peculiarities and/or play with symbolic relationships and abstract concepts. The resulting possibility of murky metaphors, contradictions and fanciful elements of her work offer the audience perpetual choice in how they philosophically, psychologically and imaginatively interpret it.

For escapism to work there must be a ‘reality’ one is escaping from. Cynthia believes that opposed to being concrete our sense of ‘reality’ or ‘truth’ is subjective and suspect to falsities and inconsistencies. Thus she is interested in illustrating fictions as an escape from the ‘normal’ but also believes that, on more acute inspection ‘normal’ is a complexity of peculiarities also worthy of investigation. Cynthia’s approach to media and themes is explorative and I rely heavily on intuition to make her work. Originally an illustrator, Cynthia now freely utilize many media from film and sound, to paint and hair.
