Chiptunes are an electronic music form focussing on pushing archaic computer hardware to create music, namely videogame consoles.

Alex Yabsley (Dot.AY) is a performing electronic musician who specialises in new and experimental forms of electronic music performance and composition. In 2007 he completed a Bachelor of Music Technology with Honours at the Queensland Conservatorium. The dissertation completed for his Honours year was entitled “The Sound of Playing: A study into the Music and Culture of Chiptunes.” As part of the dissertation Alex interviewed a number of international Chiptune artists and reflected on their practice in relation to his own. In regards to performance Alex has played extensively around Brisbane as well as in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

More recently he played at the “Game On” videogame exhibitions in both Melbourne and Brisbane, and was featured on the ABC TV program “Good Game.” His music has been internationally recognised with representation at the 2006 Amsterdam Dance Music Event, music appearing on the 2007 Music EXP compilation CD that was launched in L.A and receiving invitations in 2008 to present his honours paper at Blip Festival (the worlds largest chiptune festival) as well as perform at the Indonesian Chiptune Festival Pestamikro. Currently Alex is looking to further unify the Australian Chiptune scene through the work of the blog (gameboyaustralia.com) he established with Sydney Chiptune artist Tom Gilmore as well as very recently finally completing his debut album which is available for free download or a physical copy can be purchased from his website.
