Stephen Russell is a Brisbane based artist currently completing a BFA (honours) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He has studied as an undergraduate at the University of Westminster in London and has exhibited in both London and Brisbane, most recently with a solo exhibition at the QUT Art Museum.
Russell’s practice is based largely on exploring the potential for artwork to communicate by manipulating existing sets of visual and cultural sign systems. The work is conceptually driven and seeks to engage with the legacy of art historical codes and contemporary critical theory in the material practices of making artwork.
Russell has a forthcoming solo exhibition at BoxCopy gallery and will be profiled later this year in Young people Making Queensland a Youth Arts Queensland publication. Russell is also a founding co-director of the artist run initiative Accidentally Annie St Space.
