Looking for a New Project Now that 2high is Over?

In 2009, 2high Festival had Brisbane Creative Industries on board as an Online Media Partner.  Many of our Coordinators found out about the festival through the Brisbane Creative Industries newsletter, which is chockers with opportunties each monthly edition. Hannah Suarez is the creative (and very organised!) soul behind Brisbane Creative Industries (BCI) and now Sydney and Melbourne Creative Industries (SCI and MCI).  Here’s what Hannah had to say:

“After realising that there were little creative industries resources that I can look into to find relevant professional development events in Sydney and Melbourne, I have decided to set out and see what is out there in other capital cities. I decided to extend that idea behind Brisbane Creative Industries and release the beginnings of two new projects for Sydney and Melbourne.  You can access the events calendar, free and easy to use, on these websites and there is more to come in the future.  If you want to find out more about partnership opportunities or there is an event or project that needs to be on the Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney sites, make sure to get in touch with Hannah Suarez on .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)!

Interview with George Newman

Song-writing. Imagination and inspiration. A guitar. A voice. High school. Interview with George Newman.

Age/Sex/Location?
15/Male/Sunshine Coast

What do you think is the most interesting aspect of your work?
If I had to choose one aspect of my work I’d say the song writing. To me, as the creator of the songs, I’m interested in exploring my own emotions. So what comes out as rhythms and riddles in a song, is actually what I’m truly feeling inside. People, generally do want to hear what a fifteen year old boy in today’s society is feeling.

What inspires you to create your work?
It’s very difficult to say for sure what inspires me, because I don’t always know. Generally the songs I write are just re-told stories of my own feelings and experiences. When I say stories of experience, I don’t mean I’ll write a song about a toasted sandwich; those kinds of stories do not need to be re told. I write about the crazy dreams I’ve had or the nightmare weekdays, when teachers shout left and right. So what am I inspired by? The answer is everything.

What do you like about arts scene Brisbane?
As I’m new to the music scene, I’m still finding out what Brisbane is all about. So far I’ve met quite a few very committed people who just love music and I think Brisbane, as a growing city will have just more and more to offer in the arts. I personally love the excitement of everything happening.

What beast would you unleash?
The beast I’ll be unleashing will have legs for arms and arms for legs, twenty eyes and a very scary raw. The beast I’ll be unleashing, will be my new Cole Clark guitar.

Thank you George! Catch him at 3:00-3:30PM at Turbine Platform on Saturday the 14th.

Critical friends program

2high Festival 2009 offers the participating artists not just a place to show but a place to learn and grow. Critical Friends is one of them.

Critical Friends is a program where art professionals provide feedback to a selection of 2high Festival artists. As an emerging arts festival, we feel it is important that the artists are provided with feedback which is helpful to their career and arts practice. This year the music department and exhibitions department have provided this opportunity, with over 20 art professionals (curators, musicians, visual artists, festival managers) marching into the Powerhouse with pen and paper in hand.

In a similar program, the performance department offered many of their artists industry mentors to give advice in the lead up to the festival.

What kind of town … this town?????

Hi everyone. As you know the festival is nearly here and one of the exciting little events being organised is a forum called Creative Renegades happening at 4pm on the Saturday at the Riverbend Terrace (3rd floor). Its all about where we want Brisbane to be as an arts city and I will be mc-ing it. This won’t be your typical politically correct chat but a creative and radical revisioning of the current paradigm. Come along and be unreasonable, fantastic or weird but do not be mild. We will have two panels made up of artists from the festival.

“BRISBANE IS THE BEST ARTS CITY IN AUSTRALIA” … how does this statement hit you? Is it wrong? Is it right? Is it absurd? Is it cool?

There is a cliché and it goes like this: I am leaving Brisbane to have better arts practice/experience in Melbourne and Sydney.

Is it because of critical mass in those centres? Is the local government there more friendly to the arts? Are the laws more lenient for art projects? Is it all a fat lie? Is Brisbane already the kick ass arts city in Australia?

What experiences of cities or towns as arts centres have you had that have inspired you?

What makes a great arts city?

Here are my suggestions as starting points:

- A great public art policy from local government
-  High profile arts education in curriculum
- Cheap space for artists as workshops, rehearsal space, performance space
- Artist run initiatives and artist run spaces
- Proactive public funding bodies who get out onto the street to see what’s going on at the coal face
- Festivals
- Lunacy
- Respect

Let me know what you think?

Interview with the Moment Group

The Moment Group are a recently formed group who yearn to create touching art which breaks down social conditioning. The creative team Kimberley, Zara and Kate come from a performance background and all share a desire to facilitate art which provides a completely new experience, an experience which is unique to each individual and which exists uniquely in the moment. Interested in the artistic notion of ‘Relational Aesthetics’, the group wishes to further push the ‘art as life’ notion by creating circumstances which participants must emotionally, physically and psychologically invest in. The beauty of the performance lies in the exchange between bodies, resulting in the creation of a relationship that would otherwise not be explored.

Portraits will consist of 4 – 6 talented intellectually disabled children who get to have their chance to shine as artists. They will each have a desk to sit at and participants get the opportunity to have their portrait drawn or painted by the child. This encounter will allow for a dialogue to open up, a dialogue which would not normally occur in ‘real life’. These children are smart, talkative and open to new friendships, though they have never been asked the question ‘how do you see me?’ – this piece allows for a multi layered and new perspective of the self.
Intellectually disabled children are viewed in our society with a certain stigma. Sometimes these children are feared, stared at, blatantly disregarded but overall just generally misunderstood by those who have never had contact with them. This piece seeks to break down these barriers via the creation of small and beautiful moments that allow for an eye opening encounter.
This project is a work in development and has a unique process behind it which is very community based. A series of visual art workshops will be held at Aspley Special School, in which the children can explore their own talents and skills. This process will allow for a bond and respect to be built between the creative team, the children, parents and teachers aides. The workshops will be programmed around subtly educating the children on art as well as letting them express themselves through new mediums.

Interview with Kimberley from the Moment Group.

A/S/L? (Age/sex/location)
Kimberley, 21, Female, Kelvin Grove

What do you think is the most interesting aspect of your work ?
The most interesting aspect of our work is actually the process behind it. The workshops we have been holding Aspley Special School have been a learning curve for us all, but so rewarding. It is amazing to see the progress of our group of kids, even in minute details. To see how far everyone has come is fantastic. I feel like our group of children are a precious and pleasant surprise.

What inspires you to create your work?
My inspiration, I think, comes from a desire to acknowledge what may seem foreign or out of bounds among different social circles, reach new parts of the self and expose an audience to art that they can react to.

What do you like about arts scene Brisbane?
The Brisbane arts scene feels really good at the moment. There is a buzz in air, like something is about to happen, an explosion waiting to happen? It feels really good to be graduating from the drama degree at QUT and ‘emerging’ because the scene is still evolving, it feels great to be amongst other supportive artists that want to ‘juice’ up this scene. It would be amazing to eventually saturate Brisbane with art.

What beast would you unleash?
I would unleash a beast could make you walk in someone else’s shoes.

The Mement Group will be performing on 5:00-6:30PM on Friday, 2:30-3:30PM on Saturday at Riverbend Terrace.
